Halo-Halo: A Filipino Dessert

Want to beat the heat with a sweet treat? Look no further than Halo-Halo! This recipe is easy, using store bought fruits and other ingredients that can be found at your local Asian grocery store.

Halo-Halo translated from Tagalog means “mix-mix” and this dessert is exactly that, a mix of crushed ice, fruits, jellies and other ingredients make up this sweet dessert. You can add what you like or stick with the classic ingredients, all can be found at your local Asian grocery store.

Picture above is some of the ingredients that I used to create my version of Halo-Halo. All of the ingredients I used is optional, and it is up to you what you would like in your Halo-Halo. These ingredients listed are just some classic toppings that I found.

Ingredients

  • Crushed ice (ice cubes work fine)
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 1 can condense milk
  • 1 can of lychees
  • 1 can of logan
  • 1 can of jackfruit
  • 1 can of green ai-yu jelly or other jellies
  • 1 can nata de coco
  • Pudding / flan
  • Ice cream (ube, vanilla or your fave ice cream flavor)
  • 1 pack red bean paste (or use whole red beans)
  • 1 box Mochiko rice flour (for mochi and is optional)
  • 1 pack sweet corn
  • 2 mangoes
  • 1/2 bag of tapioca perals
  • Frosted flakes or another cereal like rice krispies

Directions

  1. First let’s make the crushed ice. For this I used an ice cube tray that I had, these ice cubes were a little big so I ended up smashing them into pieces using a plastic bag and a can of fruit that I had bought for this recipe.
  2. Once you have the desired size, I would put the ice into a freezer safe bowl and keep it in the freezer until you are ready to assemble.
  3. To make the milk mixture combine evaporated milk, coconut milk and condense milk, mixing it all together. Set aside for later.
  4. Next prepare the jellies, cut up the ai-yu jelly into smaller pieces as it come whole in the can. I like to make cubes, or you could make strips.
  5. Open the cans of fruits, lychee, logan, jackfruit, draining some of the liquid but also keeping some of the syrup. Add them all into a bowl and mix together.
  6. Add the jellies, corn and cut mango to the fruit mix. Afterwards boil the tapioca pearls (for tips refer to my Easy Mango Sago). Once cooled, add this to the fruit mix as well.
  7. Next is assembly, combine the milk mixture with all the other ingredients. Take out your crushed ice and start by scooping some of the Halo-Halo mix onto the ice. For the rest of the toppings, add to your liking.
  8. For the mochi I used my Easy Microwave Mochi recipe, I filled some with red bean paste and also had a little circle of just regular mochi to the mix. I also added a little bit more red bean paste to the surrounding area.
  9. Next I layered some ice cream on top. I didn’t have ube ice cream so instead I used Milk Bar’s Cereal Milk ice cream which includes some cereal in the middle. You can also add cereal on top.
  10. Lastly I used Trader Joe’s Ube spread, as I did not have any other ube jam. Now for the fun part, mix everything together and enjoy!
